F.A.Q. Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are a series of questions frequently asked by our guests prior to departure. If you need information not included in these pages or elsewhere on the site, please don't hesitate to contact us and we will respond as soon as possible!

Where is Los Roques? Los Roques is a coralline archipelago in the Caribbean sea located about 120 miles north of the Venezuelan coast.

How do you get to Los Roques? Los Roques can be reached by air from Caracas (45 min) or from Porlamar on Margarita Island (1 hr 45 min)

Are there ferries that connect Los Roques with the mainland? No, there are no ferries connecting Los Roques with the mainland as no real ports exist in the archipelago.

What kinds of airplanes fly between Los Roques and Caracas or Porlamar? There are three principle airlines that fly to Los Roques; the planes are double or four-engine turbo prop planes with a maximum capacity of 30 passengers.

Can I reach Los Roques on the same day I leave? Theoretically yes, since the flight to Los Roques leaves from Caracas at 16:00. However, we always recommend staying a night in Caracas and catching the first flight the following morning since a minimal delay on the international flight may result in missing the connecting, and nonrefundable, flight to Los Roques.

How do I reserve a hotel for the night in Caracas? For the sake of convenience, we recommend reserving a hotel near the airport. There are a variety of hotels that can be reserved online. For those interested, we offer a travel package that includes airport assistance upon arrival and an overnight stay in a 5 star hotel in Caracas the first night.

Once I arrive in Los Roques, what should I do? One of our representatives will be there to meet you as soon as you disembark on the landing strip in Los Roques.

From where does the sailboat leave? Usually the boat departs from Gran Roque shortly after your flight lands. If, however, you arrive at the archipelago when the boat is at another island, you will receive free transportation via motorboat. Maximum travel time: 1 hour.

What is there to do on board during the day? Every day the boat sails a short distance (on average for a few hours) to the new destination of the day. The rest of the day is entirely devoted to relaxation and other activities (fishing, swimming, snorkeling, kitesurfing, windsurfing, canoeing, etc...)

What is the water temperature? The water temperature never drops below 25 degrees; a light wetsuit is recommended for scuba diving.

What is there to do in the evening? After a dinner of seafood, freshly caught that day, the following day is planned out with the skipper. Each night is spent in a different roadstead.

Do I need to know how to sail in order to participate in a cruise? It is not necessary whatsoever. Anyone interested in sailing the boat will have the possibility to do so under the guidance of the skipper, who is always ready to demonstrate maneuvers to anyone interested. Those with no experience can learn the basics but with no pressure.

What should I bring on board? You don’t need to bring anything other than a few swimsuits! We recommend that you bring sunscreen in a variety of SPFs, generic medicine and insect repellent.

Are there many mosquitoes? Every now and then, on rare days when there is no wind, mosquitoes manage to reach the boat, but it does not occur often, and normal insect repellent is effective in protecting skin from bites.

Can I pay on board? No, for the simple reason that it is very inconvenient to manage cash in Los Roques, and we don’t offer the option of paying by credit card.

Is there a medical center in Los Roques? No, there are no real medical centers in Los Roques. A family doctor is available and all emergencies will be sent on the first flight to Caracas where they can receive treatment in the appropriate facilities. However, we recommend purchasing personal health coverage in the event of any problems.

Do Italian cell phones work in Los Roques? Yes, Italian cell phones do work normally throughout the archipelago. However, we recommend that you confirm the roaming tariff with your operator so as to avoid surprise bills. We also suggest making all international phone calls from the cabins or communications centers on Gran Roque, as you can save considerable money in this way.

Is it possible to connect to the internet in Los Roques? Yes, you can connect to the internet for $5 an hour in the aforementioned communications centers. We also have a wireless modem on board and a laptop computer but the connection is not always reliable.
